Apple's new iOS 5 has already been jailbroken by iPhone Dev Team member MuscleNerd who tweeted yesterday, "iOS 5 jailbroken: via limera1n + tethered boot... Not too many surprises." The tweet was accompanied by a picture (shown below) of Cydia and iSSH icons displayed on the screen of a 4th-generation iPod touch.
It looks like Apple essentially has done nothing to patch the known, existing exploits. Presumably this is because the next generation iPhone will have the iPad 2's A5 processor (or similar), which is not vulnerable to the existing bootrom exploits. In other words, though this jailbreak (a tethered one at that) delivers a jailbroken iOS5, it doesn't deliver a jailbroken iPhone 5 or iPad 2 running iOS 5.

iOS 5 has been jailbroken within 24 hours of its debut in the iOS dev center. According to iOS hacker MuscleNerd, the exploit uses limera1n and is a tethered boot on the iPod touch fourth generation at this time. Cydia installs fine and seems to work without issue. This achievement is good news for devs who are rocking iOS 5 and those looking forward to the release version of iOS which should land this fall.

read…Everyone’s favorite muscle-bound nerd brought iOS fans great news on Tuesday: iOS 5 has already been jailbroken. The Dev Team’s “MuscleNerd” posted on Twitter that he has successfully jailbroken Apple’s iOS 5 software using Limera1n. Right now his jailbreak is tethered, meaning the device must be connected to a computer each time it is booted, but this version of the jailbreak will never reach consumers so it doesn’t really matter. MuscleNerd says the exploit used to jailbreak the iOS 5 beta will still work on the final release version, so iOS users can sit pretty knowing the latest version of the operating system will likely be jailbroken immediately following its release this fall. Apple is patenting technology that could help stop illegal pirating of musicals, concerts and movies. The new technology would allow movie theaters to use infrared beams to shut off iPhones being used to illegally bootleg. Similar to the same technology theaters use to send audio to individual hearing-aids for the hearing impaired.
Another way the technology could be used is to create free viral marketing. Take a concert for example, a band could surround the stage with infrared transmitters that watermark the videos or pictures you capture. If you decide to record the latest Black Eyed Peas performance, and share it on your YouTube page, the video would be stamped with Blackeyedpeas.com.
The tech is more than just a Big Brother device, the same IR beams could be used to enhance some experiences by transmitting information to your iPhone about certain items; like information about a sculpture or painting at a museum.

Despite press invitations to publications in the UK and Australia, it looks like Apple's WWDC 2011 announcements will be limited to the future of iOS and Mac OS X. The next generation iPhone will certainly be running iOS 5, the next generation mobile operating system from Apple. More details of exactly what's in store for the new firmware have been leaking left and right from sources in the know.
According to TechCrunch, iOS 5 will feature widgets much like the dashboard widgets found on Apple desktop computers. These would allow iPhone owners to quickly view current information on the screen without even unlocking the device. Examples of widgets include weather, calendar entries and other displays updated in real time.
